Anup Jalota, born on July 29, 1953, is an Indian singer, musician, and actor. He is best known for his contributions to the Bhajan genre of Indian music and is popularly referred to as the “Bhajan Samraat” (Emperor of Bhajans). Let’s delve into the fascinating journey of this versatile artist:
Early Life and Background:
- Anup Jalota hails from the Sham Chowrasi Gharana of Punjab.
- He was educated at Lucknow’s Bhatkhande Music Institute.
- His father, Purshottam Das Jalota, was also a renowned Bhajan singer.
- Anup spent a few years in Savarkundla, Gujarat, during his early days.
Musical Career:
- Jalota began his musical journey as a chorus singer at All India Radio.
- His performances are often accompanied by talented musicians playing instruments such as the santoor, dholak, sarod, sarangi, violin, sitar, tabla, and guitar.
- Some of his popular bhajans include:

- Anup’s third marriage was to Medha Gujral, niece of former Indian Prime Minister I. K. Gujral and director Shekhar Kapur’s first wife. They divorced in 1994.
