The Grammy-winning Indian singer and composer Shankar Mahadevan was born on March 3, 1967. He is a member of the Shankar, Ehsaan, and Loy trio, which composes music for Indian motion pictures. Birmingham City University granted him an honorary doctorate (honoris causa degree) in 2023.

Early career and personal life
Born in Chembur, Mumbai, Shankar Mahadevan was the son of Palakkad Iyer parents who were originally from Palakkad, Kerala.He started studying Hindustani classical and Carnatic music at the age of five, studying under Shri Lalitha Venkataraman. Mahadevan trained under T.R. Balamani and Pandit Shrinivas Khale in music.

He attended Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School in Chembur and graduated in 1988 from the Mumbai University-affiliated Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology in Navi Mumbai with a degree in computer science and software engineering. He worked as a software engineer for Leading Edge.Mahadevan entered the music industry after working for Leading Edge Systems, which is now Trigyn Technologies Limited.
